Adult Coloring

Adult Coloring is something I truly enjoy, especially with all of my childlike behaviors. I can say that I frequently whip out the tools to color when I have downtime. It brings back a time when you only have to question the simple things; what color to use, what page to choose. I’m not sure if you know but this activity can be super relaxing.

Like most, I do suffer from anxiety, amongst other things but that’ll be a later post – promise! I currently have a few adult coloring books. Johanna Basford’s Enchanted Forest & Secret Garden are my favorites so far.

I was also randomly regifted with a car sun visor that you can color. I liked the idea of it and the design but I am still deciding if I want to do my own design overall on the whole thing!

I use Prismacolor color pencils to do all of my colorings, not to be used for other craft projects. Queuing the right music or with complete silence, you can get lost in the creative realm of linework and color. Dependent upon your finished goals you take your time and select every color to blend and transform your chosen image.

Adult coloring can help with a number of emotional and mental health issues, as well as help tremendously with individuals with PTSD, anxiety, and stress issues.

Advie from Johanna Basford: “Bad things happen to everyone at some point in their career. The people that succeed aren’t more talented well connected or even more lucky than you. They just pick themselves up faster. When something happens that makes you fall don’t lie there wallowing in your misfortune and misery pick yourself up work out what you’ve learnt and fire back in. The quicker you can do this the better.”

I try to use thoughts like the quote above to get through my own anxiety while working on a coloring. I have more control than you’d imagine, even with the baseline Johanna’s beautiful creation. Coloring helps with enhancing focus and concentration problem solving and organizational skills. It utilizes both hemispheres of the brain right and left. When we are thinking about balance, color selections, applying color to paper and fine-motor skills. Your brain experiences relief by accessing a meditative state.

My process 🙂

Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity simply by taking the attention away from your yourself. It relaxes the brain and the low stakes involved make it more pleasurable. Focusing on the present helps you attain mindfulness. The color options and visuals create a sense of calmness inside of me. Unplugging from technology encourages creation over consumption.

Unfortunately, it is proven that it doesn’t help everyone. I can’t imagine this not helping me as it is a very cheap, convenient and relieving. If you have yet to try adult coloring, please do. Even if it isn’t for your general health, it is loads of fun.

Until next time.

xoxo oy 🙂
